About this blog

About Elfgame: It's a pretty low-fi blog about D&D where I post whatever D&D-related ideas occur to me. I don't worry too much about editions, because I think that D&D is a language. Really, it's the ur-language of roleplaying games. Because if I say "eighth level fighter" or "plus one longsword" or "troll chieftain who can deal double damage with his girdle of giant strenght", you know what the hell I'm talking about! All gamers do. D&D is the ur-language of RPG's. It may have some regional dialects and it may not be the best RPG there is, but if you game - you speak D&D. This blog is about D&D.

Tomes of Thrilling Tales

This page is a brief overview of the different editions of D&D. It is interesting to note that all versions are still seeing active play today, as witnessed by the flow of new product coming out for all editions. It is also worth noting here that the early editions up to AD&D are nearly interchangeable - allowing experienced DMs to convert stats on the fly.

Original Dungeons & Dragons

Also known as the "LBB's", the Little Brown Box

The original D&D is a simple game stated in an obtuse manner. But it is full of powerful ideas and concepts, both expanded upon in the supplements. It provides a great toolbox for setting up heroic adventures in ancient and mysterious worlds, and leaves a lot of creative leeway for the Dungeon Master. These days it is hard to get hold of the original books and supplements; they cost top dollar in the used book market. The ruleset itself is most easily obtained as a simulacra called Swords & Wizardry (qv.).

Swords & Wizardry

S&W is the D&D ruleset re-described and updated for a modern reader. The basic S&W WhiteBox Rules are freely downloadable at Lulu.com. If you want S&W with the supplements, you'll have to pay cash moneys at Frog God Games.
